Physical therapy was established during World War I, when the United States Surgeon General declared that physical therapists (known at the time as reconstruction aides) were needed to restore the function of returning injured soldiers as well as those afflicted with polio.
Today’s physical therapists have come a long way from those days, providing health care services to patients of all ages and health conditions. On any given day, hundreds of thousands of individuals seek the services of a therapist to restore health, improve function, and alleviate pain.

Historically physical therapists have long been involved in providing health, fitness and wellness services. Unlike many other disciplines within the medical model, physical therapy has always been the non-drug, non-surgical alternative to care using therapeutic exercise as the cornerstone to improve function and quality of life.
While physical therapists do not have a monopoly on prevention and fitness services, they do possess a body of knowledge and critical thinking ability superior to others when it comes to fitness assessment and exercise development.
Implementation of the Stoneking Wellness Center has been a logical extension of the physical therapy services already offered. Using physical therapists and highly qualified exercise physiologists, our medically oriented gym stands alone in its readiness to service the healthy adult as well as those medically compromised and at risk.
